The Saskatchewan Square and Round Dance Federation was formed in 1979 after the National Convention in Edmonton and was officially incorporated as a non-profit organization in January, 1980. One of its founding member couples were Martin and Terry Mallard. The outlying objective was to guide and promote Square and Round Dancing and Clogging throughout the province as a recreation ~ to people of all ages and in all walks of life to enjoy - "Teens to Seniors" there- by enhancing the health and well being of all participants, physically and mentally. As a Federation, it is possible to provide financial assistance to many callers, cuers, instructors and clubs throughout the province.
The province is divided into eight (8) zones, with each zone having two couple reps and from these zone reps a Federation executive is formed. The business manager may be appointed outside the existing board if these skills are not found within the board. The Federation is a volunteer organization and has no paid staff.
Sask. Federation has an annual weekend which comprises mostly of dancing, plus a general meeting to inform the general membership of what has happened and what is planned for the coming year; also an executive meeting is held to discuss new issues. Sask. Federation is also involved in many promotions
Through out the year because of our involvement in Sask. Sport and Recreation. Sask. Federation benefits from all participants. The Federation is able to achieve these aims through monies they receive from the Saskatchewan Lotteries Trust Fund via Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association (SPRA) Items I and 2 listed below are totally funded from Federation dues. Items 3 through I I are funded by Saskatchewan Lotteries Trust Fund through grants and such self-help as outlined to us by SPRA. The outlines of some of the programs carried forth are as follows:

I. Liability insurance including any club equipment they wish to register.
2. Board of governors insurance which encompasses the executives of local square and round dance clubs.
3. To aid clubs financially in hosting workshops and special dances.
4. To make available to interested parties some financial help in attending caller /cuer/instructor schools, such as "CALLER LAB" AND "ROUNDALAB".
5. Support our "Society" members with expenses to attend Canadian Society meetings.
6. Assist with the publishing of a directory to inform square and round dancers of other zone activities.
7. In 1999, we established a very successful web site as we have had many contacts from all over North America and Europe requesting further information.
8. It is mandatory that no less than 10% of the Sask. Lotteries Trust Fund grant received by the Federation be spent on groups due to economic, social, physical and mental ability, race, gender, geographic location or other barriers do not have sufficient access to, or opportunities or participation in recreation programs. In past years Saskatoon inner city schools have used the funds to learn square dancing and gone on camping trips for 2-3 days where the students participated in many activities such as canoeing, horse- back riding, archery, etc. The response has been most gratifying as these youngsters have viewed the benefits beyond their inter-city life.
9. The Federation has also appointed a P.R. committee to sit on a National committee. They meet via teleconference throughout the year to keep abreast as to what is happening across the dominion in order to promote square/round dancing. They are looking at a Marketing plan to help to see "Get Involved In Square Dance Ideas."
10. We have carried on an extensive information and educational program at Teacher's Conventions in Saskatoon and Moose Jaw trying to encourage the square dance program to be implemented within the schools.
11. As a result of our careful administration of our monies in the eyes of the SPRA, it has been possible for the Federation to tap into other grants from whence we were able to purchase our hearing enhancement equipment in 2001 consisting of 14 transmitters and 56 receivers. Via this same funding structure, we have procured 160 CDs and instruction booklets for beginner dancing. During the year 2001-2002, a further grant for another 180 CDs and booklets was received. This material is available throughout the province for areas that do not have a resident caller or where the cost of a caller is prohibitive for a small number of new dancers. Grants were received to assist with sending three executive members to the Canadian I>arks and Recreation annual conference held in Saskatoon. SPRA is Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association which is an umbrella so to speak of 34 recreational groups of which Saskatchewan Square and Round Dance Federation is a member of said group. As a ember, we are entitled to attend meetings of SPRA and apply for grant monies from Sask. Lotteries Trust Fund.
As a member of SPRA, the Federation has purchased eight meters of the Trans-Canada Trail representative of the eight zones within the province - four meters being procured in the southern part and four meters in the northern part. Compiled from writeups by Merv & Jean Cooper; Past Pres.
